When you blow a candle out, you are left with a red ember that will smoke as it eats up the rest of the wick. The best way to extinguish a candle is to take a non-flammable object (metal wick dipper) and gently push the wick into the melt pool. Then lift out the wick and re-center it. Extinguishing this way helps prevent soot and conditions your wick for the next time you light it.
